Biography:
After working as freelance researcher and associate producer on regional and network TV documentaries Derek studied directing and writing at the Northern Media School, graduating in 2004 with an MA distinction in Screen Arts.
After graduation he undertook bespoke training in film production as part of the North West Vision "First Production" initiative.
From 2005 he worked as associate producer with Grindstone Pictures on the US independent production, "The Brothers Carver".
In 2005 he was commissioned by North West Vision to research and write "Defying Gravity" a report on feature film production in the North West published in October 2006. This provided the foundation for "Digital Departures" the region's current micro-budget film scheme.
In 2006 Derek set up Inspiral Films in Liverpool and has since been making commissioned films whilst developing his slate. In 2007 he directed a series of short films for the International Slavery Museum on Pan-Africanism, Civil Rights, The Black Power Movement and other related subjects.
Current projects in development include "Blackbeat" a feature film script with writer Maurice Bessman, "The Truth About SIDS" a TV documentary, "The Idiots Guide to a Carbon Free Society" a short film about climate change and "CIA INC" a feature documentary.
